Why This Easy Strawberry Dump Cake Recipe Works
FRESH STRAWBERRIES - Nothing beats fresh strawberries. While strawberry pie filling is delicious, it's not as good as using fresh strawberries. By adding some sugar and allowing the strawberries to rest, we activate a process called macerating. This means the sugar will draw out the delicious strawberry juices.
Ingredients
Please check the recipe card below for a detailed, printable ingredient list.
STRAWBERRIES - You can use fresh berries or frozen strawberries. I recommend cutting the strawberries into a variety of sizes.
CAKE MIX - You can definitely go all in and use a strawberry cake mix. However, I prefer a yellow cake mix. There's more color contrast; to me, it's more pleasing to the eye.
BUTTER - As with all of my baking, I use unsalted butter.
SUGAR - We use sugar to draw out the juices of the strawberries and salt to brighten the favors ever so slightly.
Variations
STRAWBERRY PIE FILLING - For this recipe, we are using fresh (or frozen) strawberries; another spin is to use two cans of strawberry pie filling as the base layer.
CREAM CHEESE - A delicious spin on this dump cake is a strawberry cheesecake dump cake. The technique is similar to the one I use in our Lemon Dump Cake recipe. The cream cheese mixture gets layered on top of the strawberries. And the sweet strawberry flavors work beautifully with the delicious tangy cream cheese mixture.
CAKE MIX OPTIONS - Another dry cake mix option is a white cake mix. The biggest difference between a yellow and white cake mix is that a yellow cake mix includes whole eggs, and a white cake mix only uses egg whites. Thus you will find that yellow cake mix tastes richer.
GLUTEN-FREE - This easy dessert is perfect if you are looking for gluten-free dessert options. Instead of using a traditional dry cake mix, look for a gluten-free cake mix. You find gluten-free versions of a box of yellow cake mix, vanilla, and even funfetti cake mix.

How To Make A Strawberry Dump Cake
Please check the printable recipe card below for more detailed instructions.
- DUMP & SPRINKLE - Spread diced strawberry slices in a 9x13" baking dish.
- MELT & MIX - Melt butter and mix with the cake mix in a medium bowl until the mixture turns crumbly.
- DUMP - Spread cake mix crumbles over the strawberries.
- BAKE - Set the oven to 375º Fahrenheit and bake for 45 minutes.
TIP: By melting the butter and making cake mix crumbles, you avoid having powdery bits you might have when you layer the butter on top.
Plus, this method is much faster, and I have started to use this method for most of my dump cake recipes.
Serving Ideas
A scoop of vanilla ice cream and Strawberry Dump Cake are a match made in heaven. If you are feeling fancy, add a dollop of whipped cream on top of that.
Leftovers
STORE - Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Alternatively, you can transfer any leftovers into an airtight container and store the container in the refrigerator.
FREEZE - You might be wondering if you can freeze a Strawberry Dump Cake. And the answer is yes, you can freeze it. My favorite way of serving and preserving dump cakes is to use tiny mason jars. These make great portion sizes, and they can also be used to store and freeze the dump cake for up to 3 months.
Alternatively, transfer individual pieces of the dump cake on one-way plates and wrap them in plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
