This is the bowl that empties first whenever we have people over. My husband picks out the cashew clusters when he thinks nobody is looking, so now I set some aside just for him.

Ingredients needed to make Sweet and Salty Chex Mix.

CHEX MIX – This is the bagged Original snack mix, the seasoned kind with pretzels and rye chips, not plain Chex cereal. Homemade works too if a batch is already in the pantry. Measure it by the cup so the coating covers everything evenly.

CHOCOLATE CHEX – One 12.8-ounce box measures out to about 8 cups. Any Chex flavor can stand in, so grab what the store has.

POPCORN – Plain or lightly salted popcorn is the one to use here. Pop your own or measure from a bagged kind like SkinnyPop. Save the buttery movie-style bags for movie night.

CASHEWS – Roasted and salted cashews were made for this mix. Peanuts or pecans cost less and work just as well. Skip the nuts entirely for a lunchbox-safe batch.

M&Ms – Any variety works, so match the colors to the holiday. Red and green for Christmas, pastels for Easter, team colors for game day. They always go in after the mix cools.

Leftovers and Storage

STORE – Keep the mix in an airtight container or zip-top bags at room temperature. It tastes best within the first two weeks and holds for up to a month.

FREEZE – Freeze it without the M&Ms in airtight freezer bags for up to two months. Thaw the sealed bags on the counter so any moisture lands on the plastic instead of the coating. Stir in the M&Ms once everything is back to room temperature.

REHEAT – No reheating needed. If humid weather softens the crunch, spread the mix on a sheet pan and warm it at 250º Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes. Cool completely before sealing it back up.

MAKE AHEAD – Make the full batch up to a week before your party or gift run. Store it airtight and hold the M&Ms until the day you pack or serve it.

Serving Suggestions

GAME DAY – Set out a big bowl next to a warm Queso Dip and let everyone graze from kickoff to the final whistle.

MOVIE NIGHT – Scoop it into paper cups so nobody has to share, and pass a S’mores Dip for the chocolate fans.

HOLIDAY GIFTING – Pack it into cellophane bags or mason jars for teachers and neighbors. Tuck in a few Chocolate Chip Cookies and the gift is done.

POTLUCKS – It rides in the same pan you baked it in and holds up until you’re ready to set it out. Bring it alongside Ham and Cheese Sliders and come home with empty containers.

Recipe Success Tips

Expert Tip – Calibrate the thermometer before the candy goes on the stove. Boil a small pan of water and read the temperature. Water boils at 212º Fahrenheit at sea level. If yours reads lower, subtract the difference from 252º Fahrenheit and cook the coating to that adjusted number. Two minutes of checking delivers a crisp coating every single time.

PASTRY BRUSH – Once the syrup boils, wash down the sides of the pot with a wet pastry brush. The coating cooks up smooth and pours clean.

SCRAPE – Stir from the edges toward the center at each 15-minute mark and scrape the pan bottom as you go. Every pass moves more coating onto the mix.

HOT CANDY – Pour slowly and let the wooden spoon do the spreading. The syrup runs hotter than boiling water, so this step belongs to the cook, not the little helpers.

Commonly Asked Questions

Why Do the M&Ms Go in Last?

The candy shells melt and smear if they hit warm coating. Let the mix cool completely on the pans, break it apart, then stir the M&Ms in. They stay whole, the colors stay put, and every scoop gets a few pieces of candy.

Can I Halve the Recipe?

Yes, a half batch works on a single sheet pan. Halve every ingredient, keep the oven at 250º Fahrenheit, and bake the same one hour with 15-minute stirs. A smaller candy pool reads less accurately on a thermometer, so run the calibration check first.

Can I Swap the Cereal or Nuts?

Yes, this mix takes swaps without any fuss. Trade the cashews for peanuts or pecans, use any Chex flavor, or fold in Cheerios or oyster crackers. Just keep the total near 40 cups so the candy coating stretches the same way.

Do I Need a Candy Thermometer?

A candy thermometer is the most reliable way to get the coating right. Without one, use the cold water test. Drop a little hot syrup into a cup of cold water. When it forms a firm ball that holds its shape, the candy is ready.

What Makes This Different From Caramel Chex Mix?

Sweet and Salty Chex Mix uses a light vanilla candy coating instead of a brown sugar caramel. The coating bakes into a thin, crisp shell, so the mix stays crunchy instead of sticky. It also starts with seasoned Chex Mix, which gives the salty side real depth.

Instructions

Prep the Pans

  • Preheat the oven to 250º Fahrenheit. Line two 13×18-inch rimmed baking sheets with silicone mats or parchment paper.
  • Divide the Chex Mix, Chocolate Chex, pretzels, popcorn, and cashews between the pans. Toss and spread evenly.

Make the Candy Coating

  • Melt the butter in a 4-quart pot over medium-high heat. Stir in the sugar and corn syrup until the sugar dissolves and the mixture boils.
  • Stop stirring. Brush down the sides of the pot with a wet pastry brush. Clip on a candy thermometer and cook to 252º Fahrenheit, 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Take the pot off the heat. Stir in the baking soda and vanilla. The mixture will foam.

Coat and Bake

  • Pour the hot candy evenly over both pans of snack mix.
  • Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes and rotating the pans. Scrape the pan bottoms with each stir.

Cool and Finish

  • Cool completely on the pans, then break the mix apart.
  • Stir in the M&Ms. Store airtight.

Notes

Cool Time

Cool completely on the pans, 30 to 45 minutes, before breaking apart and adding the M&Ms. Cool time is not included in the total time.
Keep It Crisp – Cool the mix completely before storing it in an airtight container. A full cool keeps the coating crisp for weeks.
