Ingredient Notes
Please check the recipe card below for a detailed, printable ingredient list.
BEEF - Ground beef adds richness and meaty flavor to the dish. For a leaner option, you can substitute the beef with ground turkey or ground chicken. You can also use frozen hamburger steaks, though they will take a bit longer to cook.
EGG - Acts as a binding agent, helping to hold the Salisbury steak patties together during cooking. You can omit the egg if you have an egg allergy.
BREADCRUMBS - Provides structure, helps absorb moisture, and prevents the Salisbury steak patties from becoming too dense. Use regular or panko breadcrumbs or crushed crackers as a substitute.
MUSHROOMS - Sliced mushrooms add earthiness and texture to the gravy. Cremini or button mushrooms work well, but you can use your favorite variety.
ONION SOUP MIX - This adds savory onion flavor and helps season the gravy. I used Lipton Onion Soup Mix. If you prefer to make your own seasoning blend, you can substitute dried onion flakes, beef bouillon powder, and onion powder.
CREAM OF MUSHROOM SOUP - Provides creaminess and richness to this classic comfort food. You can use homemade mushroom soup or a different cream-based soup, such as cream of chicken or cream of celery, as a substitute.
BEEF BROTH - Adds depth of flavor to the gravy and helps to thin it out to your desired consistency. You can substitute beef broth with vegetable broth or chicken broth.

Serving Suggestions
MASHED POTATOES - The creaminess of mashed potatoes goes hand in hand with the rich gravy of our Salisbury steak, making every bite a cozy delight. Another lovely option is our Twice Baked Potato Casserole.
GREEN BEANS - Bring a splash of color and a crisp texture to the table. They complement the savory Salisbury steak wonderfully, adding a refreshing contrast to the meal's hearty nature.
SPAETZLE - A traditional German noodle, Spaetzle is a fantastic choice to pair with our Crockpot Salisbury Steak. Unlike typical pasta, Spaetzle has a slightly chewy texture and a unique shape that's perfect for holding onto the rich mushroom gravy.
GLAZED CARROTS - Their natural sweetness and soft texture after roasting complement the savory notes of the steak, adding a hint of charm to your dinner.
Planning and Leftovers
MAKE AHEAD - You can prepare the Salisbury steak patties and gravy ahead of time and store them separately in the fridge until you're ready to cook.
STORE - To store leftovers, transfer the cooled Salisbury steak and gravy to an airtight container and refrigerate it for up to 3 days.
FREEZE - To freeze, place the steak and gravy in a freezer-safe food container or freezer bag. Remove as much air as possible from the bag, then freeze your Salisbury Steak for up to 3 months.
REHEAT - To reheat, thaw the frozen Salisbury steak and gravy in the fridge overnight and then warm it on high in the crockpot or in a saucepan over low heat on the stovetop, stirring occasionally until heated through.
Recipe Success Tips
USE LEAN GROUND BEEF - Using lean ground beef reduces excess fat in the dish and prevents the gravy from becoming too greasy.
SEAR PATTIES BEFORE SLOW COOKING - Searing the patties in a skillet or frying pan before placing them in the slow cooker adds a caramelized crust and enhances the patties' flavor.
ADJUST SEASONING TO TASTE - Taste the gravy before serving and adjust the seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or Worcestershire sauce as needed.
ADD FRESH HERBS - Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley or thyme over your dish as a garnish.
DOUBLE THE RECIPE FOR LEFTOVERS - This recipe is easily doubled to make extra servings for meal prep or freezing for later use.
THICKEN GRAVY IF NECESSARY - If the gravy is too thin, mix cornstarch with water and stir it into the slow cooker during the last hour of cooking to thicken the sauce.
GARNISH BEFORE SERVING - Garnish the dish with a sprinkle of chopped parsley.

- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon salt plus more to taste
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper plus more to taste
- 8 ounces mushrooms sliced
- 2 teaspoons garlic minced
- 1 tablespoons Lipton Onion Soup Mix
- 1 10.5-can ounces cream of mushroom soup
- 1 ½ cups beef broth
- 1 1-ounce packet gravy mix
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Instructions
- Mix ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, Lipton onion soup mix, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper in a large bowl until well combined.
- Divide beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a burger patty.
- Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown. After cooking, move the patties to the slow cooker.

To adjust the thickness of the gravy, add more or less beef broth as desired. For a thicker gravy, mix in 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch or 2-3 tablespoons of flour dissolved in cold water and then add to the gravy.
- Pour the gravy mixture over the patties and mushrooms in the slow cooker.
- Cover the slow cooker and set it to cook on low for 4-6 hours, or until the patties are fully cooked and reach an internal temperature of 160° Fahrenheit.
- Serve the Salisbury steak with gravy and your choice of sides, such as mashed potatoes, green beans, cauliflower rice, egg noodles, or your favorite.
