Ingredient Notes
Please check the recipe card below for a detailed, printable ingredient list.
BEEF – Ground beef adds richness and meaty flavor to the dish. For a leaner option, you can substitute the beef with ground turkey or ground chicken. You can also use frozen hamburger steaks, though they will take a bit longer to cook.
EGG – Acts as a binding agent, helping to hold the Salisbury steak patties together during cooking. You can omit the egg if you have an egg allergy.
BREADCRUMBS – Provides structure, helps absorb moisture, and prevents the Salisbury steak patties from becoming too dense. Use regular or panko breadcrumbs or crushed crackers as a substitute.
MUSHROOMS – Sliced mushrooms add earthiness and texture to the gravy. Cremini or button mushrooms work well, but you can use your favorite variety.
ONION SOUP MIX – This adds savory onion flavor and helps season the gravy. I used Lipton Onion Soup Mix. If you prefer to make your own seasoning blend, you can substitute dried onion flakes, beef bouillon powder, and onion powder.
CREAM OF MUSHROOM SOUP – Provides creaminess and richness to this classic comfort food. You can use homemade mushroom soup or a different cream-based soup, such as cream of chicken or cream of celery, as a substitute.
BEEF BROTH – Adds depth of flavor to the gravy and helps to thin it out to your desired consistency. You can substitute beef broth with vegetable broth or chicken broth.

Recipe Success Tips
USE LEAN GROUND BEEF – Lean beef keeps the patties tender without making the gravy too greasy.
SEAR PATTIES FIRST – A quick sear adds flavor and helps the patties hold their shape in the slow cooker.
THICKEN IF NEEDED – If the gravy seems too thin, stir in a cornstarch slurry during the last hour.
ADD A FRESH FINISH -Chopped parsley or thyme makes a simple garnish that adds color and a fresh note.
MAKE EXTRA – This recipe doubles easily and reheats well, so it’s great for leftovers or freezing.

Crockpot Salisbury Steak
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef lean
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup bread crumbs
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon salt plus more to taste
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper plus more to taste
- 8 ounces mushrooms sliced
- 2 teaspoons garlic minced
- 1 tablespoons Lipton Onion Soup Mix
- 1 10.5-can ounces cream of mushroom soup
- 1 ½ cups beef broth
- 1 1-ounce packet brown gravy mix
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Instructions
- Mix ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, Lipton onion soup mix, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper in a large bowl until well combined.
- Divide beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a burger patty.
- Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown. After cooking, move the patties to the slow cooker.
- Using the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and minced garlic. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the mushrooms have softened, then transfer them to the slow cooker with the patties.
- In a separate medium bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, gravy mix, and Italian seasoning. Whisk until smooth. To adjust the thickness of the gravy, add more or less beef broth as desired. For a thicker gravy, mix in 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch or 2-3 tablespoons of flour dissolved in cold water and then add to the gravy.
- Pour the gravy mixture over the patties and mushrooms in the slow cooker.
- Cover the slow cooker and set it to cook on low for 4-6 hours, or until the patties are fully cooked and reach an internal temperature of 160° Fahrenheit.
- Serve the Salisbury steak with gravy and your choice of sides, such as mashed potatoes, green beans, cauliflower rice, egg noodles, or your favorite.
