Ingredients needed to make a Mississippi Pot Roast recipe.

BEEF – For this recipe, we use a chuck roast because it’s well-marbled and ideal for slow cooking, resulting in tender, juicy meat. The fat content helps to keep the meat moist and flavorful throughout the long cooking process.

OIL – We use olive oil to brown the beef. Olive oil has a high smoke point and adds a rich flavor, making it perfect for searing the roast to lock in the juices before slow cooking.

SEASONINGS – This dish is seasoned with salt, black pepper, dried parsley, and garlic powder. These basic seasonings enhance the natural flavors of the beef and provide a balanced taste profile. The dried parsley adds a subtle earthy note, while the garlic powder gives a mild, aromatic touch.

ONION MIX – We use a beefy onion soup mix for its robust, savory flavor. This mix adds depth and richness to the dish, complementing the beef and other ingredients perfectly.

PEPPEROCHINI – Both the pepperoncini peppers and their juice are key to this recipe. The peppers add a tangy, slightly spicy flavor, while the juice helps to tenderize the meat and infuse it with a zesty kick.

BUTTER – Butter is used to add a rich, creamy texture to the dish as it melts over the roast during cooking. It helps to create a luscious, flavorful sauce that enhances the overall taste of the meal. As always I used unsalted butter.

Recipe Success Tips

SEAR – Browning the meat before slow cooking helps to caramelize the outside, creating a deep, rich flavor that enhances the entire dish. This step is crucial for building the foundation of your pot roast’s taste.

LOW AND SLOW – Cooking on low heat for an extended period allows the roast to become incredibly tender and juicy. This slow cooking method ensures that the meat breaks down properly, resulting in a melt-in-your-mouth texture.

ADJUST SEASONINGS – Feel free to tweak the seasonings to suit your preferences. If you love garlic, add an extra clove or more garlic powder. You can also experiment with different herbs like thyme or rosemary to give the dish a personal touch.

PEPPERONCINI OPTIONS – For those who enjoy a bit of spice, consider adding extra pepperoncini peppers or substituting some with a spicier variety like jalapeños. This can add a delightful kick to your pot roast.

Commonly Asked Questions

Should I Add Liquid to a Mississippi Pot Roast

No, you don’t need to add broth or other liquid to your roast. Once the beef cooks down, it releases juices that will combine with the pepperoncini juice and melted butter.

What if My Roast Is Tough?

If you find your roast is tough after cooking, you can simply cook it longer on low heat in the slow cooker.

Can I cook the roast on high heat instead of low?

You can cook the roast on high, but it is more flavorful and tender if cooked on low. If you wish to cook the roast on high, it should be cooked for 4-6 hours or until it’s cooked through and shreds easily.

Do I have to brown the meat before adding it to the slow cooker?

If you want to skip browning the meat, you can start on step three and just add the roast directly to the slow cooker. Omit the olive oil from the recipe and just add the salt and pepper along with the other ingredients. I recommend browning the meat first as it adds a lot of flavor to the dish.

Can I use my Dutch Oven To Cook this pot roast?

Cooking at 275º Fahrenheit in a Dutch oven allows the roast to cook slowly and evenly, breaking down the meat’s connective tissues over time. This low and slow method ensures the beef becomes tender and flavorful without drying out.

Can I use an Instant Pot To Cook the Mississippi Pot Roast?

For the Instant Pot, use the “Pressure Cook” function and set it for 60-75 minutes, depending on the size of the roast. This method cooks the meat quickly while still achieving tenderness, and it’s followed by a natural pressure release to lock in the juices.
