Ingredients needed to make Crockpot Chicken Cordon Bleu.

CHICKEN – I use boneless, skinless chicken breasts because they stay tender and shred easily after slow cooking. If you like a little more richness, boneless chicken thighs work just as well and hold up beautifully in the crockpot.

HAM – I use deli-style ham slices to make layering easier. Choose something with a mild, smoky flavor that pairs well with Swiss cheese for that classic cordon bleu flavor.

CHEESE – I use sliced Swiss cheese because it melts evenly and adds a slightly sharp, nutty flavor that balances the creamy sauce. You can use provolone or mozzarella if you prefer something milder, but Swiss gives the most traditional taste.

CREAM OF CHICKEN SOUP – This creates the rich, creamy base for the sauce and helps keep everything moist. You can switch it up with cream of mushroom or cream of celery to change the flavor slightly.

MILK – I use whole milk to thin the soup just enough so it coats everything nicely. You can use 2% if that’s what you have, but the sauce may turn out a little lighter.

MUSTARD – Dijon mustard adds a subtle tang that makes the creamy sauce more flavorful without making the dish taste like mustard. If you’re sensitive to mustard, you can cut it in half or leave it out entirely—it still works.

SEASONING – I use a mix of black pepper and Italian seasoning for simple flavor that doesn’t overpower the dish. You can add a little garlic powder or onion powder if you want to bump it up a bit.

STUFFING MIX – I use herbed stuffing mix because the seasoning blends well with the creamy chicken layers and adds that comforting, texture on top. You can use plain stuffing or even leftover homemade stuffing—just keep the moisture about the same.

BUTTER – I melt the butter and mix it into the stuffing to give it flavor and a soft, slightly crisp texture on top. You don’t need to add water here because the butter alone is enough to bring everything together.

Leftovers and Storage

STORE – Let the Crockpot Chicken Cordon Bleu cool completely, then transfer leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. This helps keep the texture from getting soggy and makes reheating easier.

FREEZE – Freeze individual portions in airtight containers to keep them fresh for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator so it reheats evenly without drying out.

REHEAT – Reheat in the microwave in short intervals or in a 300º Fahrenheit oven, covered with foil to help keep the moisture in. If the stuffing looks a little dry, you can add a small splash of milk before warming.

MAKE AHEAD – You can prepare the soup mixture and stuffing mixture the night before, then layer everything in the slow cooker insert and refrigerate it. In the morning, move the insert straight into the slow cooker and set the cooking time—it’s ready when you are.

Serving Suggestions

GREEN BEANS WITH BACON – The salty, smoky bacon adds extra flavor while the green beans bring a fresh, crisp contrast to the creamy Crockpot Chicken Cordon Bleu.

CUCUMBER SALAD – A light lemon-based cucumber salad adds a refreshing contrast.

OATMEAL DINNER ROLLS – These soft, mildly sweet rolls are great for soaking up the sauce.

TOMATO SALAD – A simple salad with tomatoes, red onion, and vinaigrette keeps the meal feeling fresh.

Recipe Success Tips

LAYER CAREFULLY – Try to keep the layers as even as possible so everything cooks at the same rate and you get that nice stacked look when serving. It also helps the cheese melt evenly and the sauce spread across all the chicken.

DON’T SKIP THE STUFFING – The stuffing adds more than just texture. It soaks up some of the sauce as it cooks, which gives the Crockpot Chicken Cordon Bleu a rich, cozy topping that pulls the whole dish together.

CHECK THE TEMPERATURE EARLY – Slow cookers don’t all run the same, and some finish sooner than others. Start checking the chicken around the 7-hour mark so it doesn’t overcook and dry out.

LET IT REST BEFORE SERVING – Giving it 5 to 10 minutes to sit after cooking helps everything settle. The sauce thickens a bit and the layers hold together better when you serve it.

USE GOOD CHEESE – Pre-sliced Swiss from the deli counter melts evenly and brings more flavor than the bagged shredded kind. If you’re not a fan of Swiss, provolone is a milder backup that still works well.

Commonly Asked Questions

Can I use rotisserie chicken instead of raw chicken breasts?

Yes, but you’ll need to reduce the cooking time since the chicken is already fully cooked. Layer the rotisserie chicken as you would raw, and cook on low for about 2 to 3 hours until everything is heated through.

What can I use instead of Swiss cheese?

Provolone or mozzarella both work well if you want something milder. For a sharper flavor, try sliced Havarti or even sharp white cheddar.

Can I prep Crockpot Chicken Cordon Bleu the night before?

Yes, you can assemble everything in the slow cooker insert the night before and refrigerate it. In the morning, place the insert in your slow cooker and set the cooking time.

Does the stuffing get soggy in the slow cooker?

The stuffing turns out soft, not soggy, and it absorbs flavor from the sauce while cooking. The edges may crisp slightly, especially if your slow cooker gets hot around the sides.

Can I add vegetables to this recipe?

Yes, but stick with low-moisture vegetables like thin-sliced mushrooms or spinach to avoid watering down the sauce. Layer them under the ham for best results.
